African Grey Parrots in the Wild: the field notes
From deep in the marshes and clearings of the Congo Basin rainforests observing African Grey parrots’ foraging behavior…
Years of work went into the research and thesis. This is a proposed book filled with field notes and photography written and shot by me, Carolyn Bentley, in the field from a summer spent hiking through a forest and marsh to forest clearings and sleeping on a cot in a tent inside a wooden structure in the Congo Basin rainforests to study Greys’ geophagy and other foraging behavior. The 1997 trip was originally funded by organizations that included WWF who facilitated local transportation and vital resource connections, including a local tribe camp guard/cook and Baka Pygmy field guides. The research was an extension of Dr. Irene Pepperberg’s on-campus work with Alex the Grey parrot, baby Griffin and Kyo, including their conservation as a threatened/endangered species and their vocalizations in the wild (with Diana May, Ph.D. candidate as lead field researcher).
Some Stage Time
In 2010, I had the amazing opportunity to speak on stage in front of possibly 1000 of my wedding and portrait photographer colleagues from around the world with a few well-known keynote speakers, like Jerry Ghionis, in the same lineup with Kevin Kubota hosting the fun event on the closing day of WPPI’s annual conference. (I worked as a photographer and spoke under my married name of Carolyn Bentley Wells.) My “Living Legacy” speech lives on in the linked YouTube video.
